Carpet stains can be a real headache. They seem to show up in the most inappropriate places, and they can be incredibly difficult to remove. If you’re dealing with a stubborn stain, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered. We’re sharing the best tips and tricks for removing the most common (and stubborn) carpet stains. So, read on for all the information you need to get your carpets looking as good as new!
Here’s how to remove the six of the most common carpet stains.
Wine, juice, or soda.
There are a few different ways to remove wine, juice, or soda from your carpet. First start by using a clean, dry cloth to absorb as much of the spill as possible. Then use a mixture of white vinegar and water to help break down the stain. You can also try using club soda or seltzer water to help lift the stain. If you have any of these items on hand, they can be a quick and easy way to remove the spill.
Grease and oil.
For a fresh grease stain, simply cover the area with a layer of salt. Let it sit for a few hours and then vacuum it up. If the stain is older, you’ll need to make a paste out of cornstarch and water. Apply the paste to the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes before vacuuming it up.
Blood.
If you’re dealing with a fresh blood stain, mix one-part hydrogen peroxide with two parts water and apply it to the area with a clean cloth. Once you’ve done that, rinse the area with cold water and blot it dry. If the stain is older, you can make a paste out of salt and water. Apply the paste to the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water.
Mud.
Mud stains can be tricky, but the best way to remove them is to let them dry completely and then vacuum them up. If the stain is still visible, mix one part vinegar with two parts water and apply it to the area with a clean cloth. Once you’ve done that, blot the area with a dry cloth and then rinse it with cold water.
Pet stains.
If you’re a pet owner, chances are you’ve had to deal with a stain or two (or ten). Pet stains can be difficult to remove, but they’re not as bad as the lingering smell! But start by tackling the stain. Blot up as much of the liquid as possible with a clean, dry cloth. Then, mix equal parts white vinegar and water and pour it onto the stain. Let it sit for a few minutes, then blot it with another clean, dry cloth.
Once you’ve treated the stain, you can address the odor. Start by sprinkling a generous amount of baking soda over the affected area and letting it sit for 15-20 minutes. Vacuum up the baking soda, then place a bowl of white vinegar in the room overnight to help neutralize the smell.
